From the The National Park Serivce : It is said that Barney Lantry and Sons, a contracting firm in Chase County, became one of the world's greatest contracting firms, and at one time was credited with being the largest supplier of crushed rock and building stone to railroads. The Lantrys had quarries throughout Chase County.
Chase County Chamber's Quarry History
Mr. Lantry eventually purchased Spring Hill Ranch from Stephen Jones in 1888 (See Spring Hill Ranch, item # 185).
According to "Big Barney" Lantry's niece, at the time of his death in in 1895, he was the richest man in Kansas. Lantry died in Strong City but was buried in Madison, Wisconsin. He was again in the news in 1997 when the Lantry Mausoleum at Resurrection Cememtery had to be razed.
