Description

There have been three separate towns with the name Labette in Labette County since 1866. The present one was founded in 1870. It was named for Pierre Labette, a pioneer settler. Labette was a station on the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad.

Chetopa was the site of a September 18, 1861 battle between the 6th Kansas Cavalry under the direction of James G. Blunt and pro-slavery raiders led by John Allen Mathews of Labette County, whose wife was an Osage and was culturally identified with the Osages:
